The Mini Contraceptive Pill

The Mini Contraceptive Pill

As the name suggests, the Mini Pill (also known as the Progesterone Only Pill - the POP) is very similar to the regular Pill. The big difference is that the Mini Pill only contains the hormone progesterone.

The Mini Pill, along with the Copper Coil, the Mirena Coil and Implanon are some of the contraceptive services available from the Hazelhill Family Practice who provide these contraceptive services to patients from across Mayo, Galway, Sligo and Roscommon

The Mini Pill is taken on a daily basis and works best when taken at the same time each day.  For example if someone was three hours late taking the Mini Pill they would be advised to use a backup method of contraception as well.

The progesterone hormone in the Mini Pill work by preventing ovulation and by thickening the cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to get through.

The Mini Pill is regarded as less effective than the regular Pill.
