Contraceptive Pill

Contraceptive Pill

The Pill or the Contraceptive Pill/ Birth Control Pill is a tablet which is taken orally. The Pill is an extremely popular form of contraception.

It works by preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg.

Contraceptive Pill, a contraceptive service provided at Hazelhill Family Practice, others include Implanon, the Copper Coil and the Mirena Coil

The Pill contains the hormones oestrogen and progestogen. These are commonly used in different forms of contraception and stop ovulation from taking place.  They also work by making it more difficult for the sperm to get through, thanks to a thickening of the cervical mucus.

The Pill is regarded as 91% effective, mainly due to human error. The common reasons for the Pill failing to work include people forgetting to take them, losing them, not refilling their prescription on time.  When the Contraceptive Pill is used properly it actually has a 99% effectiveness rating.
